Cumbria crowned 9s winners Super League

It was an all Co-operative Championship final for the culmination of the 2012 Rugby League 9s tournament which saw Cumbria crowned winners after a 16-10 victory against Featherstone Rovers at Headingley Carnegie Stadium.

The closely fought final was decided by a last minute try from Cumbria’s captain Brett Carter to ensure he lifted the trophy in front of the 1,461 strong crowd and to see Cumbria take home the £5,000 prize money.

The winning side also produced the player of the tournament as centre Carl Sice claimed the accolade following his outstanding performance.

The Co-operative Championship teams secured their places in the final following victories against two Stobart Super League sides. Cumbria beat the host club Leeds Rhinos in a convincing 18-4 victory with loose forward Liam Campbell securing two tries in the first semi-final.

It was a Rovers affair in the second semi-final as Hull KR took on Featherstone with the Championship side coming out on top. The tightly fought match ended 8-8 after the final whistle resulting in a tense golden point decider. Following unsuccessful drop goal attempts by each side, Featherstone stand-off Tom Hemmingway secured success for his team with a try under the posts.

In the Plate final, Wakefield Trinity Wildcats hat trick hero Sam Fletcher stole the show to ensure a Wildcats win against Warrington Wolves ending 28-6.

A photo finish was needed to decide Rugby League’s fastest man as Leeds Rhinos’ Jamel Chisolm and London Broncos’ Omari Caro finished neck and neck. A video replay confirmed that Caro had claimed the title and the £1000 prize money.

Rugby League 9s favourites, Wigan Warriors, took an early exit from the competition when they were knocked out by 2011 Co-operative Championship winners Featherstone Rovers in the quarter-final.  Rovers ended Wigan’s unbeaten run in the competition with a 6-4 win against the Stobart Super League side.

Hull KR defeated the 2011 Rugby League 9s title holders Warrington Wolves in the quarter-final, knocking them out of the competition by scoring 14 points in the last three minutes to finish 14-8.
