McIlorum charged by RFL Super League

Wigan Warriors hooker Michael McIlorum is facing a ban of up to three matches following his dismissal in last Friday’s 26-18 derby defeat by St Helens.

McIlorum was shown a red card by referee James Child just 15 minutes into the final game of the regular Stobart Super League season for a high and late tackle on Saints prop Anthony Laffranchi.

He was today charged by the Rugby Football League’s match-review panel with a grade C reckless challenge, which carries a suspension of between two and three matches, and will face a disciplinary hearing tomorrow.

McIlorum, who was also sent off against Bradford Bulls in June for punching, is not eligible to submit an early guilty plea.

In the worst-case scenario, McIlorum could miss the October 6 Grand Final if the Warriors reach Old Trafford.

They take on Catalan Dragons in the first qualifying play-off at the DW Stadium on Friday, when a victory would take them straight through to the semi-finals and to within 80 minutes of the Grand Final.

A defeat would mean a home game the following week against one of the winners of this weekend’s elimination play-offs.

Huddersfield Giants forward Luke O’Donnell is free to play in his side’s tie against Hull at the KC Stadium on Sunday after the match-review panel cleared him of any wrongdoing in the 48-24 win over Leeds Rhinos yesterday.

O’Donnell was sent off by referee Thierry Alibert for alleged deliberate use of the forearm on Leeds prop Ian Kirke, who was knocked out in the collision.

Alibert recalled the Australian forward from the bench after he had been replaced by substitute Larne Patrick to show him a red card.

Huddersfield coach Paul Anderson maintained afterwards that Kirke had been injured by an accidental clash of heads and was proved correct when the panel found O’Donnell not guilty.

Meanwhile, Bradford half-back Jarrod Sammut has been charged with a grade A high tackle from the Bulls’ 50-26 defeat by Catalan Dragons and will be facing a one-match ban when he faces the disciplinary committee tomorrow.
