Josh Charnley has started his international career with a bang grabbing four touchdowns in England’s emphatic 80-12 victory over Wales at Wrexham in the national team’s opening match of the Autumn International Series.

Working in tandem with Leeds Rhinos Kallum Watkins, the new pairing were in devastating form as they ripped Wales apart with some exceptional three-quarter play that could form the basis of England’s surge to the Rugby League World Cup in 12 months’ time.

“I have had a massive day with England and loved every minute,” said Charnley.

“We have worked hard over the past few weeks building up to this game and to put in a strong performance was so important. We talked about being relentless in the final 20 minutes and we lived up to those expectations. I think we have laid the foundations now to take us forward in the competition.

“When you play alongside the likes of Gareth Ellis and Kallum Watkins, you realise the potential we have. Kallum is awesome and he has a massive future in the game. He created most of my chances and forging a partnership with him is something I’m looking forward to even though I won’t be taking it for granted with the great competition we have in the backs with Tom Briscoe and the other boys out that are pushing hard to be part of this group.”

Even though it was a superb effort to score 14 tries, the Wigan speedster knows that Steve McNamara will want to improve as they approach next week’s match against France at Hull KR’s MS3 Craven Park.

“One of the things we talked about afterwards was the need to improve on today,” added Charnley.

“We scored 80 points but there are still lots of things we can improve on. We need to cut out basic unforced errors and work hard at completing our sets. We will get even better as a team but we are fully aware that we’ll be in for a real battle next week against France.”

England take on France on Saturday November 3, at MS3 Craven Park in Hull, kick off 2.30pm.

The Autumn International Series concludes with the final at Salford City Stadium on Sunday November 11 (5.00pm).
