Heinz BIG Soup, official partner of the Super League, was at the DW Stadium in Wigan today with ASDA and Wigan Warriors and England full-back Sam Tomkins to present a cheque for £4,024 to ex-professional rugby league player Andy Johnson, founder of the charity Joining Jack.

The donation comes following the highly successful sales of the 2,012 sought-after limited edition cans of Heinz BIG Soup ‘Beef, Tomkins & Onion’ – commissioned by Heinz last October in honor of Tomkins winning the celebrated Super League 2012 Man of Steel award.

Aware of Tomkins’ close ties with the Wigan-based charity, Heinz BIG Soup chose to donate all proceeds from his special £1 can to Joining Jack, the organisation set up by ex-Wigan Warrior Andy Johnson after his son Jack was diagnosed with the currently untreatable muscle wasting disease, Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.

Available exclusively at the ASDA Supercentre in Wigan, all 2,012 flew off the shelves. Proceeds raised from the sale of the commemorative Heinz BIG Soup cans have been matched by ASDA, doubling the donation to a final total of £4,024.

Sam Tomkins, who was present at the DW Stadium to present the cheque to Joining Jack, said:

“Having my face on a can of Heinz BIG Soup was not something I’d ever imagined happening, and was certainly a surreal highlight of my 2012 season! But for me, it is the connection with Joining Jack and the funds that have been raised by Heinz BIG Soup and ASDA for research into Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy that has been really special. Hopefully this donation can go some way to helping Jack Johnson and the great work that Joining Jack does.”

Chris Nunn, Senior Brand Manager for Heinz BIG Soup, commented:

“As proud supporters of Super League, Heinz BIG Soup felt it was important that we recognised Sam’s fantastic achievement of being named Man of Steel 2012. The success of the ‘Beef, Tomkins & Onion’ soup has been overwhelming and the contribution it has generated for such a worthy cause is a real bonus. A big thank you has to go to ASDA Wigan for hosting the special sale of Sam’s can and matching our donation to double the total.

Heinz BIG Soup is looking forward to another big season of Super League action this year and this is a great way to kick start the season by helping a charity that is close to so many rugby league players and fans hearts.”

Andy Johnson from Joining Jack added:

“The donation from Heinz BIG Soup is going to make a real difference. The research we are committed to undertaking is ground breaking and the support from the likes of Heinz BIG Soup, ASDA and Sam goes a long way and is truly appreciated.”
