Castleford proud of youth products Super League

Castleford Tigers’ win at the weekend against reigning World Club Challenge and Super League champions Leeds Rhinos was even more satisfying when reflecting on the fact that eight of the squad were under the age of 23 and nine have progressed through the club’s academy system.

Tigers Head of Youth Development, Steve Gill, said, “For me, the win was even more special on Sunday, given how much young home grown talent we had in the team.

“As a club we are particularly proud of those lads who played on Sunday that have come through our academy system including Clark, Holmes, Huby, Massey, Milner, Owen, Shenton, Thompson and Walker.

“Of course, we were proud of all the Federation trained and overseas players too, who along with Ian Millward and his coaching staff are bringing the young lads on really well.

“For many a year, Leeds Rhinos has set the bench mark for producing great young talent who have made it in to their first team and won plenty of trophies as a result.

“In my opinion, the youngsters in our squad are really coming of age now and are ready for the week to week rigours of Super League.

“In addition to those who appeared against the Rhinos we also have promising talents on loan and dual registered at Championship clubs including Ben Johnston (Dewsbury), James Clare (Doncaster), Daniel Fleming (Batley) and Charlie Martin (Keighley). All four are working hard to prove themselves in the hope that they too can earn their chance to step up into the first grade.

“We now have a pool of great young home grown talent here at the Tigers and I look forward to seeing them progress in to future stars who will bring a new era to the club.”
