Widnes Vikings have parted company with former England full-back Shaun Briscoe.

The 30-year-old Briscoe, who joined the Vikings from Hull KR 18 months ago, has left the club with immediate effect by mutual consent.

Briscoe, who is in his testimonial year, has not appeared in Super League since the Vikings' 62-6 defeat by Huddersfield Giants on Easter Monday and recently played on a dual-registration for Workington.

Widnes chief executive James Rule said: "Shaun has had limited playing opportunities this year and we have, therefore, agreed to an early release from his existing contract.

"This will enable him to pursue other options that will provide him with more regular playing opportunities.

"We thank Shaun for his contribution to the Vikings and wish him the best of luck in his future career."

Briscoe, who began his career with home-town club Wigan Warriors, was England's first-choice full-back in the 2009 Four Nations Series.

"I'd like to take this opportunity to thank the Widnes fans for the support they've shown me in my 18 months at the club," Briscoe said.

"It's been a frustrating time with injuries and not playing as much as I would like to have, but I'd like to wish the boys and the club the very best for the future."
